Rockhampton Inc.

The Zonta Club of Rockhampton Inc was formed in 1983 with a membership of 32 busy working women committed to "advancing the status of women worldwide". Currently there are 25 Zontians in the Club.

The Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at The Hotel Plaza, 161-167 George Street, Rockhampton at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm dinner meeting.

If you are interested in learning more about Zonta and joining our Club in its endeavours to advance the status of women please contact our President Jan Landsberg on 07 4939 8310 or send an e-mail for an invitation to join us at our next dinner meeting.

Rockhampton was founded in 1855, soon after the pioneering Archer Brothers settled at Gracemere 6.5km to the west. Queensland’s first Land Commissioner, Mr W. Wiseman was inspired by the rocks in the river, and thus named it Rockhampton. It was gazetted as a city in 1902. The majesty of Rockhampton’s historical architecture has captured the hearts of visitors for decades. Many fine public and private buildings – including Customs House, the Post Office, Cathedrals, Banks, Business Houses and Homes – are a constant reminder of a city with an exciting history. The National Trust and the Heritage Commission have listed many of these buildings. The listing of Quay Street as an ‘historic streetscape’ is unique in Australia.

Rockhampton – on the Tropic of Capricorn, just 40 kilometres inland from the Pacific Ocean sits astride Queensland’s largest river, the Fitzroy. Queensland’s favourite tropical city, Rockhampton is bounded by the magnificent Berserker Ranges and Mount Archer (607 metres high) which provide an imposing backdrop to a busy, growing city that is both friendly and vibrant. Rockhampton’s location between the coast and the rural hinterland provides visitors and residents with the choice of unlimited investment and recreational pursuits.

The region’s climate supports an outdoor lifestyle all year round. Rockhampton sits on the Tropic of Capricorn and has two seasons – wet and dry – rather than the four seasons of the Temperate Zone.

The population of the area supports a range of cultural and social activities including music, drama, arts, hobbies, speech, crafts and debating, while there are many clubs and societies representing business, pleasure and community services. The Rockhampton Art Gallery offers a diverse range of touring exhibitions and an exciting program of events including lectures and workshops. The Walter Reid Arts Centre provides a home for various cultural groups and a venue for a wide range of performances. The modern Pilbeam Theatre plays host to a multitude of national and international performers and entertainers each year.
